Learn to build a multi-layered pop-up book featuring the fascinating honeybee. Develop your palate like a honey sommelier and visit the bee yard, gardens, and orchard to understand bees and different nectar sources; leave with honey. From candles to art, dive into the versatile world of beeswax crafting.
COOKING with Megan Lambert
Spice up your dishes with a little honey! Prepare sweet treats like baklava and honeycomb candy, and learn how to incorporate honey into savory dishes, and sample some local meads.
BOOK ARTS with Jennifer York
Learn to build a multi-layered pop-up book featuring the fascinating honeybee! We will draw, cut, and stack layers of paper into a 3-D scene, then enliven our pages with watercolor painting. Our paper scenes will collapse flat into collaged hard covers. Meanwhile, learn all about apis mellifera, the incredible and important Honeybee, as the instructor is also a South Carolina Journeyman Beekeeper eager to share her knowledge.
BEES with Nancy Simpson
The Art and Science of Honey Tasting
Join a certified honey judge in a honey tasting extravaganza. Learn to develop your palate like a honey sommelier. Based on the science of honey sensory analysis and taste perception the class will focus on discerning the depth of honey flavors. Participants will be guided through a series of tastings of differently sourced honey. Like wine tasting, the goal will be to educate students to appreciate the difference between ordinary store bought, heat treated, blended honey and the superior taste of local varieties.
CANDLE MAKING / BEES WAX with Deb DeWitt
Learn how to render and creatively use 100% pure beeswax in this hands-on workshop. We'll begin by melting and filtering wax cappings, then explore beeswax’s many uses through a variety of projects. Using freshly cleaned wax, you’ll craft a luminary bowl with pressed flowers, pour molded candles, make reusable beeswax food wraps, and blend scented lotion bars. This class is perfect for beekeepers, crafters, or anyone curious about working with natural materials.

WORKSHOP: Intricate Papercut Stencil Printing
“Using the intricate papercut as source, this workshop guides students to create powerful printed patterns inspired by the bold symmetry of Hawaiian quilts and the celebratory scenes of Mexican papel picado. Students will use the precision of the x-acto knife to develop intricate stencil cutting techniques, including fold-and-cut methods, to refine meaningful motifs derived from personal imagery and local inspiration around the Arrowmont/Gatlinburg area. These detailed stencils will first be used for low-tech applications like cyanotype and spray paint. The workshop’s focus will then moves to screen printing, exploring methods such as direct stencil printing and converting the paper design into a permanent photo-emulsion screen. Students will gain hands-on experience developing repeat patterns, learning to accurately register multiple print layers, and printing continuous fabric yardage for unique, wearable textiles.”

Workshop: "Pop-Up Paper Dioramas"
Want to amaze and astound all your friends with magical pop-up book creations? Register for Jennifer York’s one-week workshop at John C. Campbell Folk School to learn how.
REGISTER:
During this workshop students will explore the power of the paper hinge and accordion fold to create multi-layered, pop-up pictorial diorama books that collapse back into hardbound covers. You will work with affordable, portable, readily-available materials and begin with small cards and samples to understand pop-up engineering. Using these materials participants will build two fascinating book structures: a tunnel (or peepshow) book and a carousel (or star) book, each with several intricately cut pages arranged in layers from front to back. You will then decorate your book covers with related collage materials, varnish them for sturdy protection, construct simple stands for display, and collapse them back flat for the journey home. Students please bring to class your sketches, imagery, photographs, writings, text, and any inspirational materials to help spark creativity for building your own unique paper worlds. Open to all skill levels.
