"Try to Sleep"
August 2019, Kristinestad, Finland
One of a kind, Original Art Object: Carousel Pop-Up Book

One of a kind, intricate, detailed, masterful, original, handmade, hand cut, illustrated art.

Made from 20 sheets of acid-free card stock within hard covers sealed with polyurethane.
5 illustrated panels, each in 4 nested accordion-folded layers. Original ink drawings, paper handcut with x-acto knife. Signed and dated.

"Try to Sleep" was created during my month-long art residency in Kristinestad/ Kristinakaupunki, Finland in August of 2019. Kiristinestad is a magical little shipbuilding town on the marshes near the Baltic Sea. It is very far north in Europe, at about the same latitude as Alaska. During my August there, the days were very, very long; the sun would set at 11pm and rise at 4am. It affected me. This piece depicts the tossing and turning of the woman in bed in the night, the naked restlessness and mind racing, the twisting up the sheets and tangling of my hair, the bleariness at all odd hours.

This form is called a carousel book because it can be positioned in the round, or display open standing upright, face up on a table. Closes fully to store away in your library. Includes two sleek display stands for front-facing and in-the-round.

Closed: 11.75" tall x 4.5" wide
Open: 11.75" tall x 24" wide
